An oubliette was a special cell in a few medieval dungeons - usually little more then a hole in the floor, probably part of the drainage system. The space could be narrow enough that the prisoner inside wouldn't even be able to sit or lay down. They'd be lowered in, the grate or cover locked in place, and left. If they were "lucky", they might have food and water provided. If they were unlucky, they'd be totally forgotten.

I don't have a medieval dungeon (yet), but I do have a narrow alcove, and it works just the same as the oubliettes of old. Kidnapped from her bedroom, my damsel is tied, gagged and stored in my basement oubliette awaiting the return of her captor!

39 photos of Mrs. Kusco tied in the oubliette. This download includes all the images in very high resolution and output quality, with no watermarks.
