At the golden crest of dawn, the Renaissance Faire at Northshire was already bustling, the air heavy with the smell of roasting meat and the clamor of joyous celebration. Among the merriment, our heroine, Catherine, shimmered in the sunbeam like a silver coin at the bottom of a clear stream. Dressed meticulously, she wore a white linen blouse, billowing at the sleeves as if the wind was trapped within. Over this, she wore an eighteenth-century stay, the corset's hard bones defining her waist with the elegance of a bygone era. Her skirt, a matching linen piece, rustled against her ankles with a gentle whisper. Though appearing seamless to a layman, a keen observer might notice her shoes were a touch off. Sure, they bore an old-fashioned aesthetic, laces twirling up to the ankles, but they were too fresh, too clean, to be anything but modern.

To the roving eye of the Faire's guards, this anomaly did not go unnoticed. Armed with unwavering dedication to historical accuracy, they were quick to act. The clamor of merriment came to a stuttering halt as the steel gauntlets of a guard clamped down on Catherine's arm. She protested in vain, her pleas drowning in the sea of spectacle and whispers of the crowd. As a symbol of the Faire's commitment to historical authenticity, the guards locked her in a scold's bridle, the cool metal framing her face with an imposing solemnity. They draped a heavy, iron yoke over her shoulders, its weight pressing down on her, a stark reminder of her 'crime'. As the bridle stifled her voice and the yoke bowed her posture, Catherine was made to parade the fairegrounds, and unbeknownst to the guards, pleased with her choice of footwear.
